Barbie Laughlin of The Villages came to Virginia Beach and made the F70-74 race look almost unfair. Her 49:20 — a 9:55/mi clip — was good enough to move her from 331st among all women at the first checkpoint all the way up to 247th by the finish, a steady climb through the field that reflects genuine, sustained speed. On the 2M–4M segment she posted the 198th-fastest women's split in the entire women's field — a standout number that underscores just how well she was moving relative to the broader race. No one in the F70-74 field came close to matching her.

Behind Laughlin, the real drama played out between Jean Bone and Deb Wolfe. Bone, 73, of Richmond, crossed in 55:03 to claim second, but Wolfe, 70, of Gainesville, actually ran the faster race — finishing in 53:12 at 10:42/mi. The catch is that Bone had established her position early; her gender rank held relatively steady through the middle miles while Wolfe faded from 268th among women at the two-mile mark all the way back to 395th by the finish. Wolfe's faster overall time tells one story; Bone's smarter pacing tells another.

Christy Hamlin, 74, of Norfolk rounded out the top four in 58:55 — the oldest athlete in the top five and the only 74-year-old to crack the hour barrier on the day. Pat King (5th, 1:03:37) and Mary Beth Poluka (6th, 1:02:55) completed the top six, with Poluka actually edging King on the clock despite finishing a place behind — another reminder that in a field of 61, every minute of early positioning matters.
