M55-59 Half Marathon: Garcia holds off a late charge to claim the crown

Oscar Garcia made the trip from Fort Lauderdale worthwhile. Starting around 100th among the men's field, he steadily climbed through the pack — reaching 86th by the midpoint and ultimately finishing 78th among men — running a disciplined 7:12/mi across 13.1 miles on a breezy, 59°F San Francisco morning. He held off a genuine threat in Juan Bautista Aparicio Parra, who tracked a nearly identical trajectory through the field, moving from 88th early to 82nd among men at the finish. The 19-second margin between them is real, but it was earned — Garcia never let Parra close the gap that mattered.

David Fu, 59, of Sunnyvale, ran a smart race of his own. Sitting around 100th among men through most of the course, he unleashed one of the stronger finishes in the group — posting the 77th-fastest men's split on the 12M-to-Finish stretch to climb to 90th among men and secure 3rd in M55-59 at 1:35:09 (7:16/mi). The top three were separated by just 49 seconds — and then the field opened up: Marcus Meier (4th, 1:44:12, 7:57/mi) came in nearly nine minutes back, having worked his way up steadily from well outside the top 400 among men to finish 228th.

Behind the podium, the race settled into a compelling mid-pack battle. Mike Ranieri (6th, 1:45:12) and Oswaldo Rodriguez (7th, 1:46:22) were separated by barely over a minute, and the 8th-through-10th cluster — Sean Heenan (1:48:40), Jeffrey Doinoff (1:50:50), and Ryujiro Tsuchihashi (1:50:56) — was tight enough to keep everyone honest to the line. All 142 finishers in M55-59 navigated San Francisco's famously demanding terrain; the wind and hills sorted the field, and Garcia was the one left standing at the top.
