The 40-year-old from Albuquerque covered 15 kilometers at a flat 5:00/mile, a pace that would have been competitive with several past open winners at this race. He held 15th in the men's field through the first 10K, then turned the screws on the closing stretch — his 13th-fastest 10K→finish split among all runners in the field was the decisive move, and nobody in the Masters Men had an answer.

Jaouad El Jazouli, 42, of Paterson, NJ, was the closest challenger, finishing 2nd in 46:57 at 5:02/mi. El Jazouli had his own strong middle segment — the 15th-fastest 5K→10K split in the field — and climbed from 17th to 14th in the men's standings across the race. But Rotich's closing kick was simply faster, and the 17-second gap at the line tells the story. Sam Morse (3rd, 47:42, 5:07/mi) rounded out the podium, also finishing strong with the 18th-fastest closing split in the field, climbing to 18th among all men by the finish.

Ricardo Estremera (4th, 49:29) and Nicholas Conway (5th, 50:05) separated themselves clearly from the rest of the top ten. Conway's performance deserves a spotlight: at 51, he ran 5:22/mi to place 5th in a Masters field of nearly 1,900, finishing ahead of athletes as much as a decade younger. Behind him, Shaun Donegan (6th, 50:55) through Thomas O'Grady (10th, 53:06) formed a tight cluster, all within about two and a half minutes of each other. With 64°F temperatures and high humidity pressing on every competitor, Rotich's wire-to-wire command of this race was a genuinely impressive Masters performance.
