She didn't get there quietly, either: she was 178th among women through the first 5K, then rocketed to 12th by 10K, posting the 9th-fastest women's split on that middle segment. By the finish she had pulled to 9th in the women's field and left everyone else in her age group nearly five minutes behind. There was no drama at the front — just a dominant, metronomic performance.

Behind her, Trisha Byler and Karen Bertasso Hughes — both 42, both making serious moves in the second half — staged the race's most compelling subplot. Byler ran a 5:57/mi average to finish 2nd in 55:29, with Bertasso Hughes just 11 seconds back in 55:40 at 5:58/mi. Both women posted the 15th- and 16th-fastest women's splits on the 5K-to-10K segment respectively, climbing from outside the top 25 among women to 15th and 16th at the tape. That's a catch-up story — two athletes who found another gear when it mattered.

The battle for 4th through 6th was decided by a matter of heartbeats. Jennifer Boerner Selig (4th, 58:35) edged Becca Ades (5th, 58:37) and Maura Tyrrell (6th, 58:37) in a three-way photo finish at 6:17/mi. Notably, Ades posted the 20th-fastest women's split on the 10K-to-finish segment — the fastest of that trio on the closing stretch — but Boerner Selig's earlier work held up just enough to keep her in 4th. Liane Zalewski rounded out the top seven in 59:28, while Stacie Minchoff (8th, 1:02:48 at 6:44/mi) and the rest of the top ten showed the depth that made this a genuinely competitive field of 418.
