F15-19: Kendall Harrell Surges to the Front in Utica

• Kendall Harrell, 18, wins in 1:00:57 (6:32/mi), more than 1:30 clear of runner-up Salma Moumen's 1:02:30.
• Harrell's closing surge was decisive: she ranked 36th-fastest among all women on the 10K-to-finish segment, climbing from 72nd to 36th in the women's field over that final stretch.
• Grace Ross, 17, was the biggest mover of the day: she entered the 10K checkpoint ranked 206th among women, then posted the 63rd-fastest women's split on the closing leg to rocket up to 81st — and into 5th place in F15-19 at 1:05:37.
• Claire Lavelle, just 15 years old, finished 9th in a 336-runner field in 1:08:51 (7:23/mi) — one of the youngest competitors in the group and far from the back of it.

Harrell's win was built on a patient first half and a ferocious finish. She was sitting 72nd among women at 10K, which in a race this deep could have spelled trouble — but she ran the back half of the course at a pace that left the field behind, crossing in 1:00:57 at 6:32/mi. That closing split ranked 36th among all women in the race, an elite-level gear for a teenager on a humid July morning in Utica.

Behind her, Salma Moumen of Canton, NY made her own move. She was the 44th-fastest woman on the 5K-to-10K segment, climbing from 71st to 47th among women by the second checkpoint and finishing in 1:02:30 (6:42/mi) to claim second. Zoe Seeley of Schenectady, 17, was right behind with the 56th-fastest women's split on that same middle stretch, crossing in 1:03:05 (6:46/mi) for third. Claire Friedel of New Hartford — also 17, and racing in her own backyard — rounded out the top four in 1:04:51 (6:57/mi).

The 1:33 gap between Harrell and Moumen tells the story clearly: the win was never seriously in doubt in the final miles. What kept the middle of the race compelling was the chase pack — Moumen, Seeley, and Friedel all ran strong 5K-to-10K segments and were separated by just 1:46 at the line. Further back, the sheer depth of 336 finishers, including a 15-year-old in the top ten, made this one of the most competitive F15-19 fields the Boilermaker has seen.
