Boilermaker 15K F30-34: Kemboi closes strong to claim the title

• Everlyn Kemboi wins in 48:28 (5:12/mi), surging from 6th to 4th among all women on the final stretch with the 3rd-fastest women's closing split (10K to finish).
• Three seconds separate first and second: Selah Busienei finishes in 48:31 — also at 5:12/mi avg — but Kemboi's stronger finish made the difference.
• Busienei's middle miles shone: she posted the 4th-fastest women's split from 5K to 10K, holding 4th among women through that segment before Kemboi's late charge decided it.
• Annie Heffernan rounds out the podium in 51:43 (5:33/mi), backed by the 10th-fastest women's closing split — a strong finish that held 11th place among women.

Everlyn Kemboi of Longmont, CO owned the final 5K of this race. Running at 5:12/mi, she sat 6th among all women through the opening two segments, then unleashed the 3rd-fastest women's closing split to cross in 48:28 and take the F30-34 title. The margin was razor-thin: Tampa's Selah Busienei, age 34, had been the more aggressive mid-race runner — her 5K-to-10K split ranked 4th among all women — but she couldn't match Kemboi's late gear and arrived in 48:31, three seconds back in second place.

Annie Heffernan of Boston finished a clear third in 51:43 (5:33/mi), more than three minutes behind Busienei but backed by a 10th-fastest women's closing split that confirmed she was moving well late. Betty Chepkwony of Iten rounded out the top four in 53:20 (5:43/mi), posting the 12th-fastest women's 5K-to-10K split and holding 12th among women through the finish. Nikki Hallenborg of New York was the standout mover in the chase pack — climbing from 35th to 29th among women across the race and finishing 5th in the F30-34 field in 59:53 (6:25/mi) with the 28th-fastest women's closing split.

Behind them, a deep field of 600 runners filled out the rest of the standings. Samantha Decker (1:01:47), Rebekah Conbeer (1:02:43), and Amanda Perri (1:03:35) led the next wave, with a tight cluster from Lauren Carr (1:05:14) through Kaitlin Astrella (1:05:55) separated by just 41 seconds across four finishers. In humid 64°F conditions on the Utica roads, every one of those seconds was earned.
