Two Cities Marathon M50-54: Coats Closes Strong for the Win

Paul Coats made the trip from Lebanon, NH pay off on this flat, Boston-qualifying course along the Fresno/Clovis border. Running a 7:16/mi average, he built his lead methodically — his gender place among the men climbed from 54th at the first checkpoint all the way to 38th by the finish, a sustained move through the field that signals a second half run with real purpose. His winning time of 3:10:19 comfortably clears the Boston standard and stands as the class of the M50-54 group by more than two minutes.

Behind him, the race for the podium was anything but settled. Oswaldo Lopez of Madera, CA had one of the sharpest early splits in the group — his 1M→10K leg ranked 46th-fastest among the women's field, a measure of genuine early speed — and he held his position well enough to finish 2nd in 3:12:35. But Stephen McSorley of Davis, CA was coming. The 54-year-old posted the 31st-fastest split in the field on that closing 25.2M→Finish segment and arrived just two seconds later at 3:12:37, a catch-up that fell agonizingly short. Lopez ran the stronger early miles; McSorley ran the faster finish. Two seconds separated them after 26.2 miles.

The rest of the M50-54 field spread out from there. Aung (4th, 3:17:33) ran a quick opening 10K — 38th-fastest in the field on that segment — but couldn't sustain the pace, finishing nearly five minutes behind McSorley. Rodriguez rounded out the top five in 3:19:09 at 7:36/mi, with 26 total finishers completing a competitive age group on one of California's most PR-friendly courses.
