M40-44: Damen Dominates on Fresno's Flat, Fast Course

• John Damen, 43, wins the M40-44 group in 2:43:30 (6:14/mi) — more than seven minutes clear of 2nd place.
• Aleksandr Fetisov takes 2nd in 2:50:34 (6:30/mi), with a comfortable 8:44 gap back to the podium battle.
• Armando Arias and Don Wang staged a tight race for 3rd and 4th, finishing in 2:59:18 and 2:59:39 — separated by just 21 seconds after 26.2 miles, with Arias making up ground in the back half.

John Damen ran away with the M40-44 title on Two Cities' point-to-point Central Valley course, posting a 2:43:30 that would make most runners half his age envious. The 43-year-old from Moraga averaged 6:14 per mile across all 26.2, a pace that landed him well inside Boston Qualifier territory and left the rest of the age group chasing a ghost. His nearest challenger, Aleksandr Fetisov of San Francisco, ran a composed 2:50:34 at 6:30/mi — a strong performance in its own right, but never quite in the same conversation as Damen's front-running effort.

The real drama in M40-44 unfolded a few minutes back. Armando Arias of Visalia and Don Wang of San Jose were locked in a grinding battle for the final podium spot, and Arias — who was running outside the top 30 among men at the 10K mark — surged through the second half to claim 3rd in 2:59:18. Wang, who had also been further back early, ran a nearly identical closing stretch to finish 4th in 2:59:39. Arias's back-half push was the sharper of the two, earning him the bronze by 21 seconds.

Just behind them, the race served up one of the day's tightest finishes anywhere in the age group. Clay Manning (Clovis) and Daric Aguinaga (Carmichael) both clocked 3:10 and change — Manning in 3:10:26, Aguinaga in 3:10:28. Two seconds after 26.2 miles. Manning's stronger closing split on the 10K-to-finish segment made the difference, but only barely. The remaining 14 finishers in the M40-44 field rounded out a 34-deep group on a course that lived up to its PR-friendly reputation for the men at the front.
