Two Cities Marathon F55-59: Gracie Johnson Runs Away from the Field

• Johnson surged through the back half, climbing from 44th to 32nd among women on the 10K-to-finish stretch — the 33rd-fastest women's split on that segment in the entire field.
• Laurie Sagardia (4:45:48) and Carmen Topete (4:49:52) battled for the podium, separated by just 4 minutes and 4 seconds at the line — though Sagardia faded on the back half while Topete closed the gap.
• Bibiana Esquibel (age 58, Inglewood) completed the full 26.2 miles in 6:15:55 to round out all six finishers.

Gracie Johnson made the F55-59 race her own from the gun. The 55-year-old from Tulare crossed in 4:05:34, a pace of 9:22 per mile on Two Cities' flat, Boston-qualifying course — and she didn't just hold steady, she accelerated. Johnson moved from 44th to 32nd among all women over the 10K-to-finish stretch, posting the 33rd-fastest women's split on that segment. The gap back to second place was a commanding 40 minutes and 14 seconds.

The real drama in the group played out behind her. Laurie Sagardia of Fresno held 55th among women through 10K but faded to 72nd by the finish, crossing in 4:45:48 at 10:54/mi to claim second. Carmen Topete of Bakersfield was right on her heels, running a slightly stronger back half — she slipped from 63rd to 76th among women but posted the 75th-fastest women's split on that closing stretch, finishing in 4:49:52 (11:03/mi). Topete cut into Sagardia's lead over the second half, making the final margin just over four minutes.

Tiffany Pierce (Clovis, 5:35:01) and Brenda Mariucci (Clovis, 5:38:22) ran nearly side-by-side for much of the race, finishing 4th and 5th just 3 minutes and 21 seconds apart. Pierce held her position steadily across the back half, while Mariucci faded slightly from 112th to 120th among women. Bibiana Esquibel of Inglewood completed all six finishers in 6:15:55, covering the Central Valley point-to-point course at 14:20/mi.
