Rocket City 10K — F60-64: Patton Runs Away from a Hometown Field

• Madelyn Patton won the F60-64 age group in 52:58 (8:31/mi), finishing nearly 70 seconds clear of runner-up Karen E Kelly.
• All three podium finishers hail from Huntsville, AL — a local sweep of the top spots.
• The spread from 1st to 11th was 37 minutes 46 seconds, with a notable gap between 7th (1:11:27) and 8th (1:24:00).
• Eleven women aged 60–64 toed the line on a 29°F morning with 16 mph winds — tough conditions for any race pace.

Madelyn Patton, 63, was the class of the F60-64 field from the gun. Her 8:31/mi average held up across the full 10K to deliver a convincing win, and her margin of 1:09 over Karen E Kelly — herself running a sharp 8:43/mi — was never seriously threatened. Kelly, 60, ran a composed second-place effort that left little room for Amy Lawrence, who crossed third in 57:26 at 9:15/mi to complete an all-Huntsville podium. Three women from the same city claiming the top three spots in a field drawn from across the Southeast is a story in itself.

Behind the podium, Debra Shone of Glasgow, KY ran a solid 1:01:49 to take 4th, nearly seven minutes back of Lawrence but well clear of the chasing pack. The real cluster came in 5th through 7th, where Lily Wagoner (1:08:32), Gina Porter (1:11:04), and Diane Palkert (1:11:27) were separated by fewer than three minutes across those three spots — competitive racing in the teeth of a bitter December wind.

The back half of the field stretched out considerably, with Karen Ritter (8th, 1:24:00), Jana McCarron (9th, 1:29:16), Melissa Butler (10th, 1:29:32), and Annie Maury (11th, 1:30:44) each finishing in a tight cluster of their own — all four within about six and a half minutes of each other. On a morning cold enough to make even standing still uncomfortable, every one of these eleven women earned their finish.
