Women's Half Marathon: Crouch Defends in the Cold, Outkicking Kronman Down the Stretch

• Allison Lekai ran the third-fastest closing split in the women's field to climb from 7th to 4th (1:27:50), while Hali Fortugno (5th, 1:27:55) and Virginia Averyt (6th, 1:27:59) were separated by a combined nine seconds across three places.
• Kathryn Dahir, 58, crossed in 1:36:19 — nearly seven minutes faster than her 1:42:58 here in 2023, one of the sharpest individual improvements in the women's field.

Twenty-nine degrees, a 16 mph wind, and a clear Huntsville sky set a frigid stage on December 14th — and Sarah Crouch answered it with the best race of the morning. The Madison, AL native ran 1:18:55 at 6:01/mi, shaving 76 seconds off her own winning time from 2024. She wasn't leading at the halfway checkpoint, but she ran the fastest closing half of any woman in the field, flipping the race on its head in the back six miles. Back-to-back wins at Rocket City Half — that's a statement.

Annika Urban Kronman had the lead at 6.8 miles and made Crouch work for it. The Atlanta 24-year-old finished in 1:19:24 with the second-fastest closing split among the women — she didn't fade, she was simply outrun by someone who had a little more left. The margin of 29 seconds tells the story of a genuine race at the front, not a runaway.

The battle for the rest of the podium and beyond was equally compelling. Emma Bell (3rd, 1:26:23) held her position throughout. Behind her, Allison Lekai made the most dramatic move of the chase pack, surging from 7th at 6.8 miles to 4th at the finish with the third-fastest closing split among the women. Fortugno (1:27:55) and Averyt (1:27:59) rounded out the top six within four seconds of each other — a three-way scrap that 29°F and a headwind couldn't slow down.

Further back, Katy Butler — runner-up here in 2024 in 1:25:09 — returned to finish 13th in 1:34:44, a very different day than last year's podium. And Kathryn Dahir, 58, of Nashville, quietly put together one of the most satisfying performances in the women's field: her 1:36:19 was nearly seven minutes faster than the 1:42:58 she ran here in 2023, a reminder that the story of an 805-woman field runs much deeper than the front.
