F60-69 Half Marathon: Yamamoto dominates in the rain

• Chiemi Yamamoto won the F60-69 group in 2:06:20 (9:39/mi), posting the 10th-fastest Lap 1→Finish split among all women in the field.
• Nancy Long, 68, was 2nd in 2:44:42 — a gap of 38 minutes and change back to Yamamoto, but a comfortable cushion over 3rd.
• Kathryn Donovan and Carolyn Meredith Simpson, both 66, finished 3rd and 4th separated by just 26 seconds — 3:09:53 to 3:10:19.
• Mari Muki, 61, rounded out the five finishers in 4:14:36, completing the half in wet, blustery conditions at 19:26/mi.

Five women toed the line in the F60-69 group on a raw Sacramento morning — 51°F, light rain, 14 mph wind, 91% humidity — and all five crossed the finish line. That alone deserves a nod before the times are even discussed.

Chiemi Yamamoto made it look cleaner than the weather had any right to allow. The 63-year-old from Roseville ran 9:39/mi from start to finish, moving from 16th among women at the first checkpoint all the way to 10th by the end — a steady, purposeful climb through the women's field that culminated in the 10th-fastest Lap 1→Finish split among all women. She won the F60-69 group by 38 minutes, which is less a gap than a statement.

Nancy Long, at 68 the oldest finisher in the group, held her position well through the back half, posting the 19th-fastest Out & Back→Lap 1 split among women and finishing a clear 2nd in 2:44:42. Behind her, the race's most compelling subplot played out between Kathryn Donovan and Carolyn Meredith Simpson. Both 66, both from the Sacramento area, they ran nearly identical races — Donovan edging Simpson by 26 seconds over 13.1 miles in the wet. Donovan's 3:09:53 held off Simpson's 3:10:19, each posting the 25th-fastest split among women on their respective closing segments.

Mari Muki made the trip from Torrance to finish 5th, completing the course in 4:14:36. On a day when the weather pushed back hard, finishing is the baseline — and every one of these five cleared it.
