M50-59: Casazza Dominates in the Sacramento Rain

• Curt Casazza won the M50-59 group in 1:29:30 (6:50/mi), finishing more than 16 minutes clear of 2nd-place Lazaro Osornio.

Curt Casazza made the M50-59 race his own from the start. Running a steady 6:50-per-mile pace through damp Sacramento streets, he posted the 2nd-fastest men's split on the Out & Back→Lap 1 segment and never relinquished his position, holding 2nd among men throughout every checkpoint on his way to a commanding win. The gap to Lazaro Osornio at the finish — 16 minutes and 26 seconds — tells the story clearly: this was a wire-to-wire performance.

Osornio, representing San Juan del Río, Mexico, was a composed 2nd, running 8:05/mi to finish in 1:45:56 and holding 4th among men at every checkpoint. Scott Clark made the most interesting move of the group, climbing from 8th to 5th among men over the course of the race to secure 3rd in M50-59 at 1:52:59 — a 7-minute gap back to Osornio but a solid performance in difficult weather.

The back half of the field told a story of steady progress. Billy Mertens (age 58) and Peter Cooper (age 59) both improved their men's standings on the Lap 1→Finish segment, with Mertens posting the 6th-fastest men's split on that stretch and Cooper the 7th-fastest. Mertens finished in 2:01:51 and Cooper in 2:07:23, separated by just under six minutes. Jidong Zheng rounded out the six-man group in 2:47:48, completing the course at 12:49/mi in what were genuinely challenging conditions for everyone on the road.
