F1-29: Cronk dominates from wire to wire in Sacramento's wet half

Cold, damp, and blustery — 51°F with light rain and 14 mph winds — the Jed Smith Ultra Classic half marathon was nobody's idea of a fast day. Cronk simply didn't care. The 29-year-old from Auburn ran 7:12/mi from the opening miles, led among all women at every checkpoint, and sealed the fastest women's split on the Out & Back→Lap 1 stretch. Her 1:34:25 was a statement performance in conditions that punished anyone who went out too hard.

The most compelling subplot belonged to 17-year-old Arabella Lobo of Elk Grove. She started 7th among women, moved to 5th by the midpoint, and finished 3rd among women — a steady, relentless climb through the field. Her Lap 1→Finish split was the 3rd-fastest among women, meaning she was accelerating while others faded in the wet and wind. Teammate in youth Maddy Elmer, also 17, ran the opposite arc: strong on the Out & Back→Lap 1 segment (5th-fastest among women on that stretch) but dropped two spots among women in the back half, settling for 3rd in the age group at 1:50:45.

Kate Watson, Carissa Kirkpatrick, Brie Siu, and Vishista Jain rounded out the seven-woman field, separated by nearly 28 minutes between 4th and 7th. In a race where the weather asked hard questions, Cronk's answer was the clearest one on the course.
