The Female Masters race at Fort Ord delivered a genuine late-race reversal at the top. Melissa Ulrich of Pacific Grove ran at the front of the entire women's field through the early going, holding 1st among women before the Skyline segment. But the final stretch had other ideas. Megumi Masuda of Cupertino, who had been running 13th among women at that same point, unleashed the 4th-fastest women's split on the Skyline→Finish segment and swept past to win in 59:01 — a 9:30/mi average over Fort Ord's demanding terrain.

Ulrich's 59:07 tells you just how tight it was: six seconds over 10 kilometers, earned by Masuda's closing surge rather than any collapse by Ulrich. Bernadette Renois of Monterey rounded out the podium in 1:00:28 (9:44/mi), also posting the 13th-fastest women's split on that closing segment — a strong finish that held off any challengers from behind.

Further back, Emily Gardner (1:05:59) and Jessica Gavel (1:06:22) had been running 10th and 9th among women respectively before the Skyline stretch, but both faded on the closing segment to finish 4th and 5th in the Masters. Maryjo Moore, 56, was quietly impressive in 6th at 1:08:48, while 64-year-old Ingeburg Hardy's 1:13:21 to claim 9th was one of the day's more quietly remarkable efforts in a competitive field.
