• Emily Gardner and Jessica Gavel waged a tight mid-pack battle, separated by only 23 seconds (1:05:59 vs. 1:06:22) for 3rd and 4th.
• 14 women completed the F40-49 race across a spread of nearly 47 minutes from first to last.

Melissa Ulrich, 40, from Pacific Grove, delivered the standout performance of the F40-49 field on a cool, breezy morning at Fort Ord. She entered the Skyline→Finish segment sitting 1st among women and closed with the 14th-fastest women's split on that stretch to hold her position and finish in 59:07 — a 9:31/mi clip that left the rest of the age group well behind. The win was decisive.

Renois, also 41 and racing out of Monterey, was the only athlete who could keep Ulrich in sight. She moved from 7th to 8th among women across the race and actually edged Ulrich on the Skyline→Finish leg — her 13th-fastest women's split there was a shade quicker than Ulrich's 14th — but the gap built earlier in the race was simply too large to close. Eighty-one seconds is not a photo finish; it's a statement.

The battle for the final podium spot was the afternoon's most compelling subplot. Gardner (Carmel Valley, age 45) and Gavel (Auburn, age 40) ran nearly identical races — both slipping from the top ten among women to outside the top 15 by the finish — and crossed just 23 seconds apart. Gardner's 10:37/mi pace held off Gavel's 10:41/mi for 3rd, with both athletes posting closely matched Skyline→Finish splits (28th and 30th fastest among women, respectively).

Behind them, Robin Bennett and Veronika Spalekova rounded out the top six within a 50-second window around the 1:10–1:11 mark, while Maureen Tedesco, at 49, became the oldest finisher in the group, crossing in 1:26:15. Mariela Hernandez closed out the field in 1:45:36, completing all 14 starters on a day when Fort Ord's trails asked something real of everyone who showed up.
