Fort Ord 10K F50-59: Masuda dominates with a sub-hour finish

Megumi Masuda turned in one of the sharpest performances of the day among the F50-59 runners, finishing nearly ten minutes clear of Maryjo Moore (1:08:48) and well ahead of the pack that bunched up behind them. Her 9:30/mi average was the engine, but the closing Skyline→Finish segment told the fuller story: she was the 4th-fastest woman in the entire women's field on that stretch, moving from 13th to 6th among women as she reeled in competitors across age groups.

Moore was solid in second, running 11:04/mi and advancing from 32nd to 19th among women — a quiet, steady climb through the field. She finished nearly six minutes ahead of the three-way scrum that settled third through fifth, where the real drama of the race played out.

That battle was tight and telling. Veronica Eguiluz (57, Atherton) and Maria Kaval (50, Menlo Park) were separated by just two seconds at the line — 1:14:12 to 1:14:14 — with Erika Budde (1:14:36) only 22 more seconds back. The key difference between Eguiluz and Kaval was the Skyline→Finish leg: Kaval had been running 22nd among women before that segment but slipped to 35th on it, while Eguiluz moved forward to claim third. Budde also closed well, posting the 45th-fastest women's split on that leg to hold off anyone behind her.

The back half of the F50-59 field spread out considerably, with Christina Slye (6th, 1:18:26) through Misty Komrowski (16th, 2:17:49) covering nearly an hour of racing. Every finisher earned their time on Fort Ord's trails.
