M20-29 at Broken Arrow 11K: Dinklage Dominates on a Hot Day at Tahoe

David Dinklage (25, Mammoth Lakes) took the M20-29 win in commanding fashion, crossing in 1:02:53 at a 9:12/mi clip over a course that tops out above 7,500 feet. That kind of pace in 87°F heat with thin air in the mix is no small ask — and Dinklage's hometown advantage (Mammoth Lakes sits well above sea level) may have been a genuine factor. He came into the final Snow King stretch already moving well, posting the 16th-fastest split on that closing segment among all men, and ticked up two spots in the men's field between checkpoint and finish.

Abraham Arellano (27, Sparks, NV) was the closest challenger, finishing in 1:03:59 — 1:06 back — and also gained ground in the men's field over that final segment. Kekoa Nelson (26, also of Mammoth Lakes) was right on his heels in 1:04:09, just 10 seconds further adrift. The top three essentially ran together in race terms; the podium was decided by margins that would be hard to manufacture in a replay. Samuel Weidner (27, Brooklyn) was a clear but respectable fourth in 1:10:39, running a steady 10:20/mi and holding his men's field position from checkpoint to finish.

Then came the real gap. Justin Fair (26, Mammoth Lakes) crossed 5th in 1:24:12 — more than 13 minutes behind Weidner — and the next four finishers, Alec Boroff through Alex Behrens, were all clustered between 1:24:35 and 1:43:58. The back half of the M20-29 field spread out considerably from there, with 21-year-old Sean Kauppila (8th, 1:40:57) the youngest finisher in the group and Santiago Calvo (20, 14th, 2:24:39) the youngest competitor overall. Joseph Watkins closed out the field in 3:04:12 — a reminder that on a mountain course at altitude in summer heat, simply finishing is its own achievement.
