It was a small but spirited field in the M70-74 race at the 2022 San Francisco Marathon 10K — just two finishers, both age 73, both willing to take on a hilly San Francisco course on a cool, humid July morning. That's the kind of shared stubbornness worth celebrating on its own.

Jeffery Richardson of Livermore took the win decisively, crossing in 57:04 at a 9:11/mi clip — a pace that held the hour at arm's length with nearly a minute to spare. Over 6.2 miles of San Francisco terrain, that's a controlled, confident performance from a 73-year-old who clearly knew his race.

San Francisco's own Kevin Mckean gave the course a different answer, finishing in 1:04:01 at 10:18/mi. The gap to Richardson — 6:57 — reflects a meaningful difference in pace, roughly a minute and seven seconds per mile slower across the full distance. Mckean nonetheless covered the ground and posted a legitimate finish on a demanding urban course.
