The conditions were hardly fast, but Snyder made them look manageable, crossing the line 52 seconds clear of local runner Leslie Lerner, whose 1:05:12 at 10:30/mi was a strong second-place effort in her home city.

Cathy Hickey of Basingstoke rounded out the podium in 1:07:14 (10:49/mi), with Joyce Schmidt just 36 seconds further back in 4th at 1:07:50. Karen Boyko-Gate finished 5th in 1:10:02, opening a gap of more than two minutes to the cluster that followed — a clear break in the field before the real drama of the mid-race pack.

That drama belonged to positions 6 through 8, where three runners essentially raced to the same finish line.
