SF Marathon 10K — F45-49: Mackay Dominates with a 5-Minute Gap

• Kirsty Mackay won the F45-49 race in 48:05 (7:44/mi) — more than five minutes clear of the field.
• Annabelle Gambier (2nd, 53:08) and Tammy Friedman (3rd, 53:19) were separated by just 11 seconds after 6.2 miles.
• Carmen Fung (4th, 54:01) was another 42 seconds back, rounding out a tight battle for the final podium spots.
• 78 women finished in the F45-49 race on a cool, overcast San Francisco morning.

Kirsty Mackay, representing Ayrshire, made this one a solo effort from the gun. Her 48:05 — averaging 7:44 per mile through San Francisco's streets — left the rest of the F45-49 field chasing a ghost. The runner-up finished in 53:08. That's a margin of five minutes and three seconds over 6.2 miles, and it wasn't close at any point that mattered.

The real drama played out behind her. Annabelle Gambier of Cognin and Tammy Friedman of Los Altos ran each other into the ground over the full course, arriving at the finish just 11 seconds apart — Gambier in 53:08 at 8:33/mi, Friedman in 53:19 at 8:35/mi. Carmen Fung of El Cerrito pushed hard at 8:42/mi but couldn't quite bridge the gap, landing 4th in 54:01.

The chase pack for spots five through seven was its own battle. Galina Hale of Sausalito (5th, 57:55), Maureen Flanigan of San Francisco (6th, 58:22), and Katie Stout of Danville (7th, 58:37) were separated by just 42 seconds across three finishers — tight racing in a field that stretched all the way to Samantha Giardinelli (10th, 1:01:25) and beyond. The cool 55°F conditions and marine overcast were about as forgiving as San Francisco gets in July, and 78 women took full advantage.
