The weather was about as kind as San Francisco gets, but the course still demanded respect.

Janette Mayes, 72, of San Francisco, made it look like a different race entirely. Her 1:17:22 finish at a 12:27/mi clip put her in a league of her own — that 14-minute-plus cushion over second place wasn't a photo finish; it was a statement. Running on home streets, Mayes controlled the race from start to finish.

Behind her, the real drama played out between Christine Louie, 73, making the trip from Honolulu, and Berkeley's Margaret Simon, 72. Louie crossed in 1:31:58 (14:48/mi) to claim second, with Simon finishing just 1:15 later in 1:33:13 (15:00/mi). Louie held her pace advantage through to the end, but Simon made it a genuine contest — 75 seconds over 6.2 miles is a slim margin by any measure.

Karen Queally, 70, of San Bruno, wrapped up the field in 1:38:06 at 15:47/mi — completing a four-woman group that deserves real recognition just for showing up and racing a 10K through San Francisco at 70-plus. Mayes took the win decisively, but every finisher here earned their result.
