There's only one way to win the F80+ field at the San Francisco Marathon 10K: show up and finish. Katherine Singer, 81, did exactly that — crossing the line in 1:27:48 to claim the top spot outright.

At 14:08 per mile through San Francisco's hills and fog, Singer covered every step of the 10K course on a humid July morning that would give pause to runners a generation younger. Las Vegas may be her home, but she made herself right at home on the Bay.

A field of one is still a field completed. Singer's finish is its own story — an 81-year-old toeing the start line of a major city marathon event and seeing it through to the end. That deserves more than a footnote.
