SF Marathon 10K — F1-19: Claire Young Owns the City Streets

• Claire Young, 15, wins in 48:12 — a 7:45/mi pace that put more than a minute of clear air between her and the rest of the field.
• 12-year-old Annabel Chung finishes 2nd in 49:21, edging 19-year-old María Rivera (3rd, 49:38) by 17 seconds in a tight battle for the podium's second step.
• Top 8 finishers all broke 57 minutes; the field then spread across the final 32 spots, with 9th through 20th spanning a range from 1:00:10 to 1:06:48.
• Youngest finisher in the top 20: Kaylani Sison, age 7, crossing in 1:04:52 — a 10:26/mi effort that placed her 18th among 40 finishers.

Cool and damp at 55°F with heavy humidity blanketing the Bay, conditions were tough but consistent for all 40 girls who toed the line. Claire Young, just 15 years old and racing on her home turf in San Francisco, made it look manageable — her 7:45/mi average was the standard everyone else was chasing, and nobody got close. She won by 1:09 over 2nd place, a margin that tells its own story.

That battle for 2nd was genuinely compelling. Annabel Chung — only 12 years old — held off 19-year-old María Rivera by 17 seconds to claim the runner-up spot, finishing in 49:21 to Rivera's 49:38. Rivera ran a 7:59/mi pace and had age on her side; Chung ran a 7:57/mi pace and had none of it — and still came out ahead. Mackenzie Gordon, 18, rounded out the top four in 51:26, followed by Sara Horta (5th, 53:10) and Deeya Mistry (6th, 53:28) separated by just 18 seconds.

The field's age range was one of the more striking features of the day. Between Kaylani Sison (age 7, 18th in 1:04:52) and Maria Michelle Cortez (age 8, 19th in 1:05:08), the F1-19 field proved that this race draws competitors at every stage of young athletic life. Julia Lanzinger, 12, from Saalfelden finished 7th in 54:17, and her compatriot Marie Lanzinger, 11, also from Saalfelden, finished 20th in 1:06:48 — two young runners a long way from home, both leaving their mark on the San Francisco streets.
