In a race where the next 19 finishers ranged from 43:23 to 54:42, Haabeth was simply in a different contest.

The battle for the podium was its own compelling story. Andy Spratley, 59 years old and racing out of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, claimed 2nd in 43:23 — running 6:59/mi to hold off Aleksandar Naumoski (44, Sunnyvale) who finished 3rd in 44:20. The age gap between Spratley and the men he beat makes that silver all the more striking.
