Edwin Riddle, three years his junior at 73, gave him a genuine race, clocking 58:35 at a 9:26/mi pace. That 53-second gap was the tightest in the entire field, and Riddle's effort was no consolation prize — he simply ran into a competitor who was sharper on the day.

The next cluster told a different story. David Greene (3rd, 1:14:16) and John Herbert (4th, 1:17:10) ran in the 11–12 minute-per-mile range, with John Abernathy (5th, 1:18:32) close behind at 12:38/mi. Those three were separated by just over four minutes total, making for a quietly competitive battle for the middle of the podium.

Zloof, at 85, was the oldest competitor in the M70+ field, and his 17:16/mi average over that distance needs no embellishment.
