San Francisco Marathon F45-49: Fierens Edges Out a Thriller at the Front

• Sofie Fierens (Aarschot) won the F45-49 race in 3:19:31 (7:37/mi), posting the 13th-fastest women's split on the 14.95–18 Mile stretch to seal the victory.
• Julee Danner (Olathe, KS) finished 2nd in 3:20:20 — just 49 seconds back — after running the 12th-fastest women's split in the first half.
• Kate Willett (Springfield, OR) stormed home 3rd in 3:31:25, posting the 22nd-fastest women's split on the 18–24 Mile segment — a late charge that carried her from 77th among women at the halfway checkpoint all the way to 39th by the finish.
• Sally Ford (Hutton Roof) earned 4th in 3:35:15, closing with the 29th-fastest women's split on the 24-Mile-to-finish stretch — rising from 146th among women early in the race to 49th at the line.

The headline battle in the F45-49 field was a tight, tense duel between Sofie Fierens and Julee Danner. Danner looked dangerous early, holding 12th among women through the first half thanks to one of the sharpest opening splits in the women's field. But she faded through the middle miles, slipping to 16th among women by the finish. Fierens, meanwhile, was threading her way forward — moving steadily from 17th to 13th among women — and her strong 14.95–18 Mile segment proved the decisive move. The gap at the line was just 49 seconds across 26.2 miles, but Fierens earned it by running the stronger second half.

Behind them, the real drama was a tale of two surges. Kate Willett was 77th among women at the halfway point and looked out of contention, but she ran the 22nd-fastest women's split from mile 18 to 24 to vault into 3rd in F45-49 at 3:31:25. Sally Ford was even more dramatic — she was 146th among women through the early miles, an extraordinary deficit, yet she clawed all the way to 49th among women by the finish on the strength of the 29th-fastest women's closing split. Her 3:35:15 secured 4th, just 18 seconds ahead of Nattaporn Chaikaew (Seattle, WA), who finished 5th in 3:35:33.

The rest of the 104-finisher F45-49 field showed real depth, with Patricia Nickel (Highlands Ranch, 6th, 3:43:10) and Bertha-Angelica Garcia-Gonzalez (Anaheim, CA, 7th, 3:43:32) separated by just 22 seconds, and Ewelina Lucow (Los Gatos, CA, 9th, 3:46:42) and Cathy Tsai (Pleasanton, CA, 10th, 3:46:44) finishing in virtually the same clock time — two seconds apart after more than three and a half hours of racing.
