San Francisco Marathon F40-44: Banks Runs Away from the Field

Angie Banks turned the F40-44 race into a one-woman show. Running 6:57 per mile through San Francisco's famously rolling streets, the Morgan Hill native held 7th place among all women from the very first checkpoint and never wavered — then found another gear in the final stretch, posting the 5th-fastest women's split between miles 18 and 24 to move up to 6th among women at the finish. Her 3:02:09 is a commanding result in a 104-finisher field, and nearly half an hour separated her from anyone else in the F40-44 race.

The real drama played out in the chase for 2nd. Kristin Bowen ran a patient, progressive race — sitting 51st among women early and steadily working her way to 38th by the finish — while Michelle Chau was even more aggressive, charging from 98th among women at the opening checkpoint all the way to 40th. Chau's surge through the middle miles was particularly sharp: she posted the 31st-fastest women's split between miles 14.95 and 18, and kept the pressure on. In the end, Bowen held on by 23 seconds — 3:31:05 to Chau's 3:31:28 — a finish time gap that belied two very different race strategies converging at the same point.

Tina Tran's early burst was the most eye-catching tactical gamble of the day. She rocketed from 124th to 59th among women in the opening 5.7 miles, but the effort cost her — she drifted back to 63rd by the finish, crossing in 3:38:45. Ingeborg Brouwer (3:44:44, 6th) and Hilary Baude (3:47:58, 7th) rounded out a strong top tier, while Hannah Steiner just missed a sub-4:00 finish, clocking 3:59:58 for 10th.
