M20-29: Montgomery Leads the Way in San Francisco

• Connor Montgomery won the M20-29 race in 2:38:22 (6:02/mi), finishing 5th among all women — a full 5:44 ahead of runner-up Morgan Turpin.
• Anthony Ponce ran the most dramatic race of the day, climbing from 122nd to 24th among women en route to 5th in M20-29 with a 2:49:26, posting the 7th-fastest women's split from 24 Miles to the Finish.
• Riley Nichols (2:53:54) and Neel Fulton (2:54:07) finished 7th and 8th just 13 seconds apart, both averaging 6:38/mi.
• The top 20 in M20-29 all broke 3:04, with Alex Saveliev (15th, 3:00:00) and Jackson Gallagher (16th, 3:00:04) separated by just 4 seconds near the sub-3:00 threshold.

Connor Montgomery made it look controlled from the gun. Running 6:02/mi through San Francisco's punishing hills, he held 5th among women for the majority of the race and never wavered once he settled into his rhythm after the first half. His 2:38:22 — more than five and a half minutes clear of the field — was the commanding performance of the day in M20-29.

Behind him, Morgan Turpin (2nd, 2:44:06) and Steel Patel (3rd, 2:46:03) ran composed races, both sitting in the top 13 among women from the opening miles. Turpin posted the 5th-fastest women's split on the 10.92 Miles→Garmin Hill Challenge stretch, while Patel had the 8th-fastest women's split on the early 2.2–5.7 Mile segment. Wesley Tse (4th, 2:49:18) was the quiet mover of the podium chase, climbing steadily from 54th to 23rd among women across the full race to finish just 8 seconds ahead of Ponce.

The race's most electric story, though, belonged to Anthony Ponce. Starting the race buried in 122nd place among women, the 21-year-old from Manassas Park, VA, spent 26.2 miles threading his way through the field. By the time the city opened up in those final two miles, he was flying — his 7th-fastest women's split from 24 Miles to the Finish sealed 5th place in 2:49:26. Jordan Marcus (6th, 2:49:50) was just 24 seconds back, but Ponce had earned his finish the hard way.

Further down the leaderboard, the 457-strong M20-29 field was dense with competitive times. Kenny Chi (10th, 2:56:56) and Tamer Metwalli (11th, 2:57:05) were separated by 9 seconds at 6:45/mi, and the stretch from 13th through 17th — Hunter Miller through Ethan Trepka — was packed into a 75-second window between 2:59:12 and 3:00:27.
