Three women in their eighties ran the San Francisco Marathon within 23 seconds of each other, and the race to the finish line was as tense as anything the course produced on Sunday. Sharon Kerson, 81, of Culver City crossed first in 8:01:05, claiming the F80+ win with a margin that left no room for comfort. Behind her, Gloria Bassler — at 86, the oldest finisher in the group — and Lynn Costa, 84, of Hamden, CT, were locked in a battle that came down to the final two seconds.

The split data tells an interesting story about how the race shaped up. Costa and Bassler were nearly inseparable through the first half — Costa's split ranked 643rd among women, Bassler's 644th — suggesting they ran shoulder to shoulder for much of the opening 13 miles. Yet it was Bassler who nosed ahead of Costa in the final standings, crossing in 8:01:26 to Costa's 8:01:28. Kerson, meanwhile, had a slightly slower first-half split (709th among women) but held her lead through the back half to secure the victory.

All three women tracked almost identically through the women's field as the race progressed — each moving through the same checkpoints in near-lockstep, drifting back through the standings as the field spread out over the miles. What never wavered was their commitment to the finish line, all three completing 26.2 miles through San Francisco in just over eight hours. At 81, 84, and 86 years old, they didn't just finish — they raced each other to the wire.
