Rocket City 5K: Guthery Wins M50-54 in the Cold

• Daniel Guthery (age 54, Cullman) took the M50-54 title in 20:58 — a 6:45/mi clip in 29°F wind-chilled conditions.
• Chip Thigpen pushed him every step of the way, finishing just 12 seconds back at 21:10 (6:49/mi).
• A 2:57 gap separates the podium's second and third spots — Vicente Rivera (24:07) crossed well clear of the chase pack behind him.
• 10th and 11th — Brandon Keller and Sean Davis — finished in the same clock time of 31:24, with place settling what the seconds couldn't.

The story at the front of the M50-54 group was a genuine two-man race. Guthery, the oldest of the top two at 54, ran a composed 6:45/mi to hold off Thigpen's 6:49/mi effort across the 3.1 miles. Twelve seconds is close enough to feel the breath on your neck, especially when a 16 mph wind is already doing its best to slow everyone down on a frigid December morning in Huntsville.

Rivera made the podium comfortably — his 24:07 puts him nearly three minutes behind Thigpen but a solid distance ahead of the rest of the field. From fourth place onward, the group spread out steadily, with Andrew Benicasa (27:04) and Kevin Sykes (28:00) rounding out the top five. Eric Reynolds and Darius Gamble were close behind, separated by just 18 seconds across 7th and 8th place.

Mid-pack had its own intrigue: Keller and Davis, both from McDonough, GA, crossed in identical 31:24s — their places determined by a margin too small for the clock to display. From there, the field stretched out toward the 40-minute mark and beyond, with 23 men in total completing the race across a wide range of paces. For everyone out there running 3.1 miles in sub-freezing temperatures with a stiff wind, just finishing in those conditions is its own statement.
