Rocket City 5K — F35-39: Rachel Evans Runs Away With It

• Rachel Evans won the F35-39 age group in 27:40 (8:54/mi) — a margin of 3 minutes 27 seconds over runner-up Carrie Christian.
• Carrie Christian and Shauna Perry claimed 2nd and 3rd, separated by 1 minute 17 seconds, with Perry edging out 4th-place Rosmin Ennis by just 1:14.
• Laura Mulqueen and Rosmin Ennis battled closest of all at 4th and 5th — only 6 seconds apart at the line.
• Jessica Conley and Lindsay Sippel crossed in the same displayed time of 35:23 — Conley edged into 8th by the finest of margins.

Racing in 29°F with a 16 mph wind cutting through Huntsville, the 26 finishers in F35-39 ran a gritty 5K, and Rachel Evans made it look like a different race entirely. The 38-year-old from Meridianville posted an 8:54/mi average — a full minute per mile faster than anyone else on the podium — and her 27:40 finish left the rest of the field chasing a ghost. By the time Christian crossed in 31:07, Evans had been done for nearly three and a half minutes.

Behind Evans, the battle for the podium was a proper race. Christian's 31:07 gave her a comfortable cushion over Perry's 32:24, but positions 4 through 7 were tightly packed. Ennis (33:38) and Mulqueen (33:44) were essentially shoulder-to-shoulder — six seconds over 3.1 miles in freezing wind is as close as it gets without a photo finish — followed by Hayashi (34:35) and Howell (35:01). That stretch of the leaderboard had real racing in it.

The most striking moment in the results came at 8th and 9th: Conley and Sippel both show 35:23, but the timing system's finer resolution handed 8th to Conley. No tie — just a sliver of daylight between two Madison-area runners who clearly pushed each other to the very end. From there, the field spread across another 12 minutes down to Bethany Turner's 47:03, with six more finishers rounding out the 26-strong group — all of them earning a finish in conditions that would have kept plenty of people on the couch.
