Rocket City 5K — F50-54: Banning-Johnson wins a frigid battle of Georgians

• Billie Banning-Johnson took the F50-54 title in 28:31 (9:11/mi), edging Teresa C by just 25 seconds.
• The top four finished within 1:22 of each other — a tight, competitive cluster at the front of a 29-woman field.
• Arien Dwyer (age 54) was the oldest woman in the top four, finishing 4th in 29:53 — the top age-54 finisher in the group.
• From 5th place onward, the gaps widened sharply: Beverly Hensarling's 31:13 was already 80 seconds off the podium.

With the temperature locked at 29°F and a 16 mph wind cutting across Huntsville, the F50-54 women had more than each other to race against on Saturday. Billie Banning-Johnson of Villa Rica, GA made it count, crossing in 28:31 at a crisp 9:11 per mile to claim the age-group win. It was a Georgia sweep at the front: Teresa C (Woodstock) and Hannah MacDonald-Reiter (Atlanta) ran 28:56 and 29:31 respectively to claim 2nd and 3rd, making the podium an all-Peach-State affair.

The real drama was in how compressed that lead pack ran. Four women finished within 1:22 of one another — Arien Dwyer of Pearl, MS slotting into 4th in 29:53 at 9:37/mi despite being the oldest of the group at 54. That's a remarkably even front pack for any race, let alone one run in near-freezing conditions with a stiff wind. Banning-Johnson's 25-second margin over Teresa C was enough to be decisive, but not comfortable.

Behind the top four, the field spread out considerably. Beverly Hensarling and Bonnie Reese ran 31:13 and 31:24 to round out the top six, but from 7th place onward — Stephanie Kinslow's 33:59 — the gaps grew into minutes rather than seconds. All 29 finishers deserve credit for toeing the line in conditions that would have kept most people indoors.
