M25-29: Springer Breaks 20 Minutes in the Huntsville Cold

Twenty-five men lined up for the M25-29 5K on a sharp December morning in Huntsville — 29 degrees, a 16 mph wind, and clear skies that offered no shelter. At the front, Alex Springer made it look manageable. The 29-year-old from Madison crossed in 19:57, running 6:25/mi to become the only man in the group to dip under the 20-minute mark. That sub-20 is a clean, hard benchmark, and Springer owned it outright.

Jacob Nelson pushed him every step of the way. The Huntsville local finished in 20:09 — 12 seconds behind Springer — running 6:29/mi in what was the sharpest head-to-head battle of the morning. After those two, the field spread out quickly. Tyler Linton (22:07) and Patrick McMackin (22:40) rounded out the top four, separated by 33 seconds, while Paul Dehm (23:32) completed the top five just under the 24-minute mark.

Further back, the race offered its own drama. Kyle Barry (26:58) and Cody Cost (27:02) were separated by just four seconds in 7th and 8th, and deep in the field, David Whitehead and D'Mario Washington staged perhaps the tightest finish of the day — 36:27 to 36:28, one second deciding 15th and 16th place after more than half an hour on a bitterly cold course. Zach Maguire and Martin Salazar were similarly inseparable in 18th and 19th, finishing a single second apart at 37:30 and 37:31. On a day built for attrition, the M25-29 group delivered plenty of fight from front to back.
