Rocket City 5K: Kristen Toppin dominates the F40-44 field in the Huntsville cold

At 29°F with a stiff 16 mph wind cutting through Huntsville, this was a morning that sorted out the serious from the stubborn — and Kristen Toppin of Waterloo, Iowa, was the most serious of all. She crossed in 22:39, running 7:17 per mile, and built a gap that no one in the F40-44 group could challenge. By the time runner-up Perla Nunez of Madison, Alabama finished in 24:45, the race for first was long settled.

Nunez's 7:58/mi pace earned her a comfortable 2nd, but the real drama played out just behind her. Holly Connell (Huntsville) and Elizabeth Jarding (Caledonia, MS) ran almost identically through the cold — Connell finishing in 25:17, Jarding in 25:18 — with the timing chip making the call that a stopwatch never could. Connell takes 3rd; Jarding, 4th, with a single second between them. Savannah Crittenden rounded out the top five in 25:54.

The field stayed competitive well into the standings. All ten of the top finishers broke 29 minutes on a day when the wind chill alone was enough to slow a pace. Amy Syx (7th, 28:00) and Amber Nixon (8th, 28:08) pushed each other through the final stretch, separated by just eight seconds. Across all 43 finishers, the F40-44 group showed up and raced hard in genuinely difficult conditions — and Toppin made it look easier than it had any right to be.
