M70-74: Landefeld Dominates in the Huntsville Cold

Six men aged 70–74 toed the line in Huntsville on a frigid December morning — 29°F, a sharp 16 mph wind, and clear skies that offered no shelter from the cold. Dale Landefeld made it look as controlled as conditions allowed. Running 9:45 per mile, he steadily climbed through the men's field all race long, moving from 658th to 485th among men by the finish — a gain of 173 places that speaks to a remarkably even, disciplined effort.

Larry Lyda claimed 2nd in 4:33:54 (10:27/mi), also trending forward throughout, advancing from 703rd to 595th among men. The gap between him and Landefeld — 18 minutes and 22 seconds — was the widest margin between any two consecutive finishers in the group, meaning the real contest was for the places behind. Jeff Johnston of Deer Park, WI crossed 3rd in 4:38:23, just under five minutes behind Lyda, though his race told a different story: he moved forward early but faded in the back half, sliding from 570th to 623rd among men after the midpoint.

David Tibbetts (5:07:42) and Bob Strauss (5:29:27) rounded out the top five, separated by nearly 22 minutes. Strauss, 73 — the oldest finisher in the group — actually gained ground in the final stretch, climbing from 910th to 810th among men over the course of the race. Steven Stange closed out the M70-74 field in 5:39:35, finishing 1:24:03 behind Landefeld. On a day that would have tested runners half their age, all six men finished — and that alone deserves recognition.
