Rocket City M40-44: Suetsugu edges Uyemura in a 19-second thriller at the top

In 29°F cold and a 16 mph wind, Huntsville's Rocket City Marathon delivered a razor-sharp contest at the top of M40-44. Hisato Suetsugu of Peachtree City, GA, ran a measured 6:10/mi to cross in 2:41:38, but he had to earn every second of it. Trevor Uyemura of Vienna, VA, tracked him through the back half, climbing from 15th to 12th among the men in the final segment and finishing in 2:41:57 — 19 seconds separating them after 26.2 miles of racing in the cold.

Suetsugu's route to the win wasn't without turbulence. He surged from 13th to 7th among the men through the first half, posted the 4th-fastest 10K-to-Half split in the men's field, then settled back to 11th by the finish — a sign that his early aggression cost him a touch of ground late, but not enough for Uyemura to close the gap. Uyemura, by contrast, was steadier throughout, ticking off positions methodically and posting the 16th-fastest Half-to-20M split in the men's field.

The most dramatic story of the day belonged to Joe Verellen of White Lake, MI. Running with the front pack through the halfway point — 7th among the men at 10K, 8th at the half — Verellen's race unraveled in the back half, and he dropped to 36th among the men by the finish, ultimately landing 5th in M40-44. Meanwhile, Steven Claremon of Alexandria, VA, ran the opposite race: patient early, he climbed from 48th to 29th among the men, taking 4th in M40-44 with a 23rd-fastest 20M-to-Finish split in the men's field.

Cheng Nie of Ames, IA rounded out the podium in 2:46:59, also closing well with the 23rd-fastest second-half split among the men to finish 3rd. Behind the top five, Andrew Hodges of Huntsville ran a solid home-course effort in 6th at 2:52:43, while the M40-44 group spread across a wide field of 114 finishers — a testament to the depth this age group brought to Rocket City.
