Rocket City Marathon F55-59: Mary Kreis Wins a Cold-Weather Charge to the Line

• Mary Kreis (55, Belle Vernon, PA) won the F55-59 group in 3:48:04 (8:42/mi), edging Teresa Brininger by 1 minute 27 seconds.
• Teresa Brininger made the most dramatic move of the race, climbing from 106th to 78th among women across the final stretch — the biggest positional gain on the women's leaderboard of anyone in this group.
• The top two were separated by under 90 seconds; 3rd-place Malinda Honkus (3:54:53) finished nearly six minutes back, making the real battle a two-woman affair up front.
• At the back of the top 20, Wendy Tyler (5:14:46) edged Ann Mix (5:14:47) by a single second — same displayed time, different places, different runners.

Twenty-nine degrees, a 16 mph wind, and clear Huntsville skies set a bracing stage for the 32 women of the F55-59 group. Mary Kreis navigated it as well as anyone, running a measured 8:42/mi to claim the win. Her gender standing actually dipped slightly in the early miles — from 83rd to 87th among women through the first checkpoint — before she reeled it back in, finishing 70th among women. The 20M-to-finish segment was her sharpest move, posting the 73rd-fastest closing split among the women in the field.

Teresa Brininger told an even more compelling story of patience. The Huntsville local was 106th among women at the opening checkpoint and still 96th at the halfway mark, before uncorking a closing stretch that lifted her all the way to 78th — and within 1:27 of the win. Her final segment ranked 63rd among women on that closing stretch, fractionally better than Kreis's, but the deficit built in the early miles proved just too large to erase.

Malinda Honkus (3:54:53, 8:58/mi) locked up third with a solid middle-miles segment — her 86th-fastest women's split from the half to mile 20 helped her hold position through the race's most demanding stretch. Shana Brown (3:59:44) was the only other finisher to break four hours, slipping across in 9:09/mi pace. Behind her, the gaps widened considerably — Kate Kan's 4:05:54 in 5th and Marquel Clark's 4:09:45 in 6th representing the last of the sub-4:10 group before the field spread out across the afternoon.
