Rocket City Marathon F50-54: Davies dominates in the December cold

With temperatures locked at 29°F and a 16 mph wind cutting through Huntsville, the F50-54 field of 34 got a genuine winter marathon on Sunday. Cheryl Davies, 52, from nearby Madison, Alabama, handled it better than anyone. Her 9:03/mi average was a clear class above the field, and her late-race movement — surging from 156th among all women at the start to 100th by the finish — shows she ran a smart, progressive race rather than going out too hard and hanging on.

The gap between Davies and second-place Peggy Bourland Evans (4:06:15) tells a story of its own. Evans, 53, from Birmingham, actually ran her best women's split between 10K and the half — 126th-fastest among women on that stretch — suggesting she was moving well through the middle miles. But the second half was harder: her gender place drifted from 103rd to 132nd by the finish, meaning the field gradually came back to her. Still, nearly nine minutes clear of third place is a comfortable podium spot.

Lisa Larsen (3rd, 4:15:32) and Eunja Rau (4th, 4:20:08) both ran strong closing legs, each posting top-155 women's splits on the 20M-to-finish segment. That put them ahead of fifth-place Mindy Elliott on the back half — Elliott had been the quicker of the two through the halfway mark but faded slightly, finishing just 11 seconds behind Rau after more than four hours of racing. Jennifer Flint rounded out the top six in 4:25:41, leading a cluster of seven finishers who completed the race between 4:25 and 4:32.
