Sam Chelanga made the 2,258-strong M40-44 field look like a different race entirely. Running 4:48 per mile through Atlanta's July humidity, the 41-year-old from Fayetteville was never seriously threatened — his gender standing hovered between 20th and 21st throughout, a remarkably consistent effort across every split of the course. By the time he crossed the line, Thompson was still more than a mile of race time behind him.

The real drama unfolded in the battle for the rest of the podium. Thompson (35:25) ran a measured race but gradually ceded ground through the second half, sliding from 86th among men at the first checkpoint to 107th at the finish. Kinley was the opposite story in the middle miles, climbing from 198th to 163rd between miles two and four before settling into third. Hennessy was the most aggressive finisher of the group — patient through the first half, then relentlessly picking off competitors to claim fourth in 36:34.

Heidenhain rounded out the top five in 36:42, though he ran a slightly different rhythm — holding steady early, dipping back slightly in the closing miles. Behind him, Brian Lang and Brett Dettmering both finished in 36:50 and 36:52 respectively, separated by just two seconds for 6th and 7th. The density through the mid-pack was real: positions 6 through 14 were covered by a single minute of racing.
