John Woodnutt set the standard in the M70-74 group, running 7:54/mi across Boston's famously demanding point-to-point course — Newton Hills, Heartbreak Hill, and all. His checkpoint progression tells an interesting story: he moved through the men's field steadily from the mid-race miles onward, climbing from roughly 8,209th among men at the early splits all the way to 6,623rd by the finish, a sustained move forward over the second half of the race.

Behind him, Sandy Rutledge and Ockle Johnson ran their own parallel race. Rutledge (3:31:38, 8:04/mi) held the edge for 2nd, while Johnson (3:33:49, 8:09/mi) kept pace throughout but couldn't quite close the 2:11 gap. James Linn and John Hieb then played out one of the tighter duels of the day in this group — Linn held 4th at 3:35:57 while Hieb finished just 14 seconds back in 3:36:11. The middle of the M70-74 leaderboard was a genuine pack race. Eduardo Matsuo (3:49:10), Frederic Whiteside (3:49:24), and Steven Murray (3:49:33) finished within 23 seconds of each other in 7th, 8th, and 9th — three men from three different states (MI, IL, MD) converging on Copley Square almost simultaneously. Michael Alexander and Juan Méndez followed close behind at 3:50:13 and 3:50:27, keeping the pressure on all the way down the leaderboard. All 20 listed finishers broke four hours, with David Theoharides of Massachusetts sneaking under at 3:59:14 to close out the top 20.
