Boston F60-64: Valencia Runs Down the Field for a 3:11 Win

• Dolores Valencia (CA) took the F60-64 title in 3:11:06 (7:17/mi), winning by 3:36 over runner-up Yong-Son Basta.
• Yong-Son Basta (CT) ran a strong second in 3:14:42, while Sally Gibbs completed the podium in 3:17:56 — a top three separated by under seven minutes across 26.2 miles.
• Cindy Conant (MD) and Linda Eng (ON) staged one of the day's closest finishes, crossing in 3:24:32 and 3:24:35 — three seconds apart at 7th and 8th.

Dolores Valencia ran the kind of race that rewards patience. She entered the women's field around 1,009th at the opening splits and spent the first half steadily climbing — reaching 720th among women by the half, then 628th, 614th, and 570th through the Newton Hills stretch. By the finish she had climbed to 577th among women, a relentless forward march at 7:17/mi that earned her the F60-64 crown by three and a half minutes. Her 523rd-fastest women's split on the Half-to-25K segment shows she was doing real damage in the race's middle miles, right where Heartbreak Hill does its worst.

The story at the front of the pack was almost the inverse for Sally Gibbs, who blazed through the early miles — sitting 138th among women after 5K and posting the 196th-fastest women's 5K-to-10K split in the field. But that pace came at a cost: she faded progressively through the back half, sliding from 246th to 415th to 549th to 820th and ultimately 1,068th among women by the finish, crossing in 3:17:56 for third. Yong-Son Basta ran a far more measured race from the other direction, sitting 346th among women early before settling back into a steady groove and holding on for second in 3:14:42 — a 3:36 gap back to Valencia, and 3:14 clear of Gibbs.

Behind the podium, Kris Huff (GA, 3:19:52) and Maria Coetzee (3:20:19) both ran strong negative-split-style progressions, each climbing hundreds of places in the women's field over the second half. Huff moved from 1,785th among women at the opening checkpoint all the way to 1,251st by the finish; Coetzee made an even bigger move, surging from 2,576th to 1,290th. Their 27-second gap at fourth and fifth was the tightest battle just off the podium. Further back, the near-dead-heat between Conant and Eng — 3:24:32 to 3:24:35 — was the day's most dramatic finish in the F60-64 group, three seconds deciding seventh and eighth across 26.2 miles.
