Boston Marathon F75-79: Gayle Robinson Owns Patriots' Day

• Gayle Robinson won the F75-79 age group in 5:02:55 (11:33/mi), finishing more than 17 minutes clear of the field.
• The gap from 1st to 7th spans 55:59 — seven women in their mid-to-late 70s covering 26.2 miles through Newton Hills and Heartbreak Hill.
• Mary Harris (2nd, 5:20:13) and Kathryn Parks (3rd, 5:33:42) were separated by 13:29, with Patty Hung (4th, 5:51:05) and Arlene Rockefeller (5th, 5:53:00) finishing within two minutes of each other late in the race.
• The bottom of the podium was tight: Rockefeller's 5:53:00, Ikuko Hampton's 5th-place 5:54:17, and Susan Waisbren's 5:58:54 were all within six minutes of each other.

Seven women aged 75–79 toed the line in Hopkinton on a mild Patriots' Day — 55°F, manageable humidity, a light wind — and every one of them made it to Copley Square. That alone is a story worth telling. But Gayle Robinson made it her story from the start.

Robinson, representing BC, ran a remarkably composed 11:33/mi to finish in 5:02:55 — the only woman in the group to break the five-and-a-half-hour mark by a significant margin. Her gender place among the women's field actually improved in the race's final miles, moving from around 9,629 to 9,550 by 40K, a sign she was still finding legs when others were fading. Her split from 24 miles to 40K was the 8,786th-fastest among all women on that stretch — meaningful forward momentum deep in the race.

Mary Harris of Pennsylvania ran a steady 12:13/mi to claim second in 5:20:13. Her strongest relative segment came between 21 miles and 35K — the 8,442nd-fastest women's split on that stretch — but her gender place drifted steadily through the back half, reflecting the toll of the Newton Hills. Kathryn Parks (Washington) rounded out the podium in 5:33:42 at 12:44/mi, posting her best relative split in the field between the half and 25K before the course wore on her in the closing miles.

The battle for fourth through sixth was the age group's tightest subplot. Patty Hung (5:51:05) and Arlene Rockefeller (5:53:00) were separated by just 1:55 at the line, with Ikuko Hampton of New Jersey (5:54:17) only 1:17 further back. Susan Waisbren, one of two Massachusetts runners in the field, closed it out in 5:58:54. All seven finishers — from Robinson's 5:02:55 to Waisbren's 5:58:54 — can say they ran Boston at 75-plus. That's not nothing.
