Two Cities Marathon F50-54: Debra Avila Runs Down the Field

• Debra Avila won the F50-54 group in 3:49:35 (8:45/mi), finishing more than 7 minutes clear of runner-up Angelica Lucas.
• Avila started deep in the women's field — 68th among women at the first checkpoint — and climbed all the way to 28th among women by the finish, the most dramatic rise of anyone in the group.
• Lucas posted the 18th-fastest women's split in the opening 1M→10K segment, going out hard from 29th among women before gradually fading to 41st by the end.
• The final podium spot belonged to Alyssa Telegan, who closed strongly with the 36th-fastest women's split on the last 25.2M→Finish stretch to seal 3rd in 4:13:07.

Debra Avila's victory was built on a patient, relentless climb. She crossed the first checkpoint as low as 68th among women — a position that might have rattled a less disciplined runner on a warm 74°F morning in Fresno — but she kept picking people off, checkpoint by checkpoint, until she settled into the upper tier of the women's field. Her 8:45/mi average held firm across 26.2 miles, and the result was a wire-to-wire improvement that no one in the F50-54 group could match.

Angelica Lucas, also 50 and local to Fresno, came out with genuine early speed — her 1M→10K split ranked 18th among all women — and briefly sat as high as 19th among women. The back half told a different story, as she faded to 41st by the finish, but her 3:56:39 was still good enough for a comfortable second place in the group, more than 16 minutes ahead of Alyssa Telegan. Telegan, the oldest finisher on the podium at 54, did her best work late: her 25.2M→Finish split was the 36th-fastest among all women, a strong close that held off Andrijana Tomic (4:21:17) and Van To (4:23:31), who rounded out the top five.

Behind the podium, the field spread across nearly two and a half hours — from Lihong Yang's 4:45:19 in 6th to Alma Lara's determined 6:39:04 in 16th. Eleven of the 16 finishers broke five hours, and every one of them navigated the same clear-sky heat to get there.
