Running 7:07 per mile on a warm November morning in Fresno — 74°F and clear — he steadily picked off runners from the gun, moving from 137th among men at the first checkpoint all the way to 42nd by mile 20. He never faded. By the finish he sat 43rd among men, a position that speaks to just how far outside his M55-59 peers he was operating.
