F40-44 at Two Cities: Gomez dominates while Burns and Ge-Stadnyk wage a 26.2-mile duel for silver

Paola Gomez, 43, ran a race that belonged in a different conversation from the rest of the F40-44 field. Holding 7:40 per mile across 26.2 miles in 74°F heat, she was sitting 3rd among all women through the half before gradually settling to 11th by the finish — a sign that the warm Fresno afternoon took its toll on the field around her, not on her lead within it. Her 3:21:02 was untouchable in the age group, and her 8th-fastest women's split on the mile 23-to-25.2 stretch showed she still had something left when others were fading.

Behind her, the real drama was a two-woman chess match. Burns came out swinging — she was already 13th among women at the half after a blistering 10K-to-half segment — but Ge-Stadnyk was the steadier climber, methodically working from 47th among women at the gun to 13th by the finish. Both ran 8:12–8:13 per mile averages, and the gap at the line was a mere 33 seconds after more than three and a half hours of racing.

Laura Parkinson and Ann Marie Bensen rounded out the top five within two minutes of each other, both strong second-half movers — Bensen posting the 19th-fastest women's split on the back half of the course. With 40 women finishing in F40-44 on a warm November morning in Fresno, the depth of the group was real. Gomez simply made it look like a different race entirely.
