San Francisco Marathon 10K: Amano Rules the M75-79 Field

• Jun Amano took the M75-79 win in 57:27 (9:15/mi), finishing nearly a minute ahead of runner-up Jeffery Richardson.

Jun Amano, 77, from Hillsborough, made his intentions clear from the outset and never let up. His 9:15/mi average was the sharpest pace in the M75-79 field, and his 57:27 finish gave him a comfortable cushion over the field. On the final stretch from 4.62 miles to the finish, Amano posted the 732nd-fastest split among the men — a strong close that cemented his lead.

Jeffery Richardson of Livermore pushed Amano hardest, running a disciplined 9:23/mi to finish in 58:21. The 54-second gap between them was the tightest of the day in this field, and Richardson's closing split — 763rd-fastest among the men on that final segment — showed he was running with purpose to the end. Behind them, San Francisco's own Yee Moon Lee held third at 10:32/mi, finishing in 1:05:25 and clear of the rest of the field.

The back half of the M75-79 race told a different story. Krish Krishnamurthy (75, Irvine) came home in 1:18:42 at 12:40/mi, followed by Yuh-Nung Jan (77, San Francisco) in 1:21:55 at 13:11/mi — a 3:13 gap between them. Dennis Mori of San Leandro closed out the six-man field in 1:46:57, running a 17:13/mi pace across the cool, overcast streets of San Francisco.
