Donene Vukovich of Sacramento made the outcome look straightforward. Running at 7:45/mi, she crossed in 48:08 and also climbed from 51st to 46th among all women on the final 4.62-mile stretch — posting the 37th-fastest women's closing split in the field. The margin she built was real: runner-up Jennifer Witt finished in 50:01, meaning Vukovich had nearly two minutes in hand.

Behind her, the race for the podium was genuinely gripping. Witt (50:01), Goya (50:10), and Fernandez (50:18) ran the first half in tight formation, but the final segment reshuffled things. Goya, a San Francisco local, closed with the 56th-fastest women's split on that stretch and moved up from 78th to 70th among all women — enough to edge Fernandez for third. Fernandez, who had been running in the top 60 women at the halfway point, faded on the closing miles with the 157th-fastest women's split, slipping to 74th overall among women and just barely holding off Goya for fourth. Witt, meanwhile, also lost ground late — sliding from 61st to 68th among women — but her earlier cushion was enough to secure second.

Rachel Smith (51:07) rounded out the top five with a strong finish of her own, climbing from 97th to 81st among all women on the closing segment. Behind her, Heather Boshears (6th, 51:56) and Michelle Vannelli (7th, 52:08) kept the pressure on, separated by just 12 seconds, before the field spread out through the teens and into the 102 additional finishers who completed the course under cool, overcast San Francisco skies.
