F50-54 at Shamrock'n Half Marathon: Martinez dominates from the front

• Vicky Souza ran the 63rd-fastest women's split on the Mile 2–Mile 5 stretch, her strongest segment, finishing 2nd in 1:44:43.
• Asvi Phuong and Sandra Bond finished 3rd and 4th separated by just 10 seconds (1:50:53 vs. 1:51:03) — the tightest battle on the podium.
• Beth Nixon closed out the top five in 1:53:01, rounding out a podium spread of nearly 16 minutes from first to fifth across 115 finishers.

Teresa Martinez didn't just win the F50-54 group — she put the field away early and kept pulling. Her gender place among all women climbed steadily from 45th at the first checkpoint all the way to 39th by the finish, a quiet, relentless forward march at 7:24 per mile. On the second half of the course she posted the 36th-fastest women's split in the field, meaning she wasn't coasting to the line — she was still racing. The 53-year-old from Grass Valley left no doubt.

Behind her, Vicky Souza had a race of two halves — quite literally. She surged through the early miles, posting the 63rd-fastest women's split between miles 2 and 5, and climbed from 78th to 66th among women in that stretch. But the back half was harder, and she slipped to 84th among women by the finish. She held on for 2nd in 1:44:43, a result that flatters neither the early promise nor the late fade — but a podium is a podium.

The real drama in this group played out for 3rd place. Asvi Phuong, running on home turf in West Sacramento, was 241st among all women at the first checkpoint and spent the entire race climbing — finishing 144th, a gain of nearly 100 places. She crossed in 1:50:53. Sandra Bond of Sacramento had tracked a steadier, if slightly fading, line all day and crossed in 1:51:03. Ten seconds after 13.1 miles. Phuong's closing split (103rd-fastest among women from mile 11 to the finish) was just enough to hold Bond off, whose best segment had come earlier, between the half and mile 11.
