M19-24 at Shamrock'n Half Marathon: Garcia dominates, a three-way photo finish shocks the middle

• Devon Hammeke held 5th among men through Mile 5.13 before fading to 13th by the finish line — yet still claimed 2nd in M19-24 in 1:19:32.
• Nick Short, Luke Zinky, and Geramie Clinkscales all clocked 1:38:39 for 14th, 15th, and 16th — separated by just 0.18 seconds across three runners.
• Milo Stibor posted the 37th-fastest split in the field on the Mile 11→Finish stretch, surging from 133rd among men to 83rd to lock up 4th in M19-24.

Garcia made the M19-24 race look almost unfair. The 20-year-old from Salinas crossed in 1:16:16 at a 5:49/mi clip — nearly three and a half minutes clear of runner-up Hammeke — and his split from Mile 2.04 to Mile 5.13 ranked 5th-fastest in the entire field, a sign he was already in a different gear early. His place among men actually improved in the closing miles, ticking up to 5th before settling at 6th, confirming he ran the second half as strongly as the first.

Hammeke's race told a different story. The 23-year-old from Shasta Lake was sitting 5th among men through the first half, looking like a legitimate overall contender, but the back half unraveled. He slipped to 13th among men by the finish — still good enough for 2nd in M19-24 in 1:19:32, but a reminder of how punishing this course can be when the pace comes due. Hunter Dierlam of Sacramento ran a steadier race for 3rd in 1:21:06, barely moving in the men's standings across the final miles.

The most dramatic moment of the M19-24 race had nothing to do with the podium. At positions 14 through 16, Nick Short, Luke Zinky, and Geramie Clinkscales — all from the Sacramento region — finished in 1:38:39, separated by a total of 0.18 seconds. The places are real and decisive (Short edged Zinky by 0.12 seconds, Zinky edged Clinkscales by 0.06), but you'd need a stopwatch with a microscope to feel the difference. In a field of 184 finishers, that stretch of racing was the closest the M19-24 group had to offer.
